The team

Our dentists are all registered as specialist orthodontists with the General Dental Council (GDC), which means, on top of their initial training to become dentists and their general practice experience, they have done at least five years’ further supervised training, leading to their MOrth qualification.

Our orthodontic therapists have all completed their specialist training in dental school and comprehensive in house training in practice, before qualifying with the Diploma in Orthodontic Therapy. They work under the direct supervision of the orthodontists, following their instructions and prescriptions, and are an essential part of the orthodontic team.

Our nurses are all GDC registered and several have additional qualifications such as their orthodontic nursing certificate, radiography and dental health education.

We also have a strong support team with many years’ experience in reception, administration and management.

Having an on-site laboratory means we can swiftly produce your appliances and our lab technicians are always on hand to support and advise our orthodontists about the design of appliances.

Marie-Louise Stewart

Marie-Louise qualified as a Dental Surgeon from Newcastle University in 1987 and then went into general dental practice in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, for four years.

She was always keen to specialise in orthodontics and, in 1991, she moved to Sheffield to undertake her orthodontic training. She qualified as an orthodontist in 1996 and joined our practice as an associate in 1998. When the previous Principal and owner, Neil Spaven, retired in 2007, Marie-Louise took over the practice and now runs it with her husband, Andy. She has three teenage children, one of whom has just had his braces removed!

Fiona Dyer

Fiona qualified as a dentist from Leeds Dental Institute in 1989. Her initial working experience was in maxillofacial surgery and general dental practice in Bradford. She then moved to Sheffield where she completed her three years orthodontic training. She gained her Master’s degree in 1996 with Distinction, and, in 1997, she completed her Membership in London, for which she was awarded the BSSO Gold Medal.

After a further four years of training in the hospital orthodontic departments of Sheffield, Rotherham and Chesterfield, she achieved her Intercollegiate Fellowship Examination in 2001 and was awarded the Maurice Berman Prize for clinical practice.

She is a part time Consultant at the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital, where she teaches and trains undergraduate dental students and postgraduate orthodontic students.

Clare Shaw

Clare has worked as a dental nurse in the Mansfield area since 1990. After a career break to have her daughter, she joined us as a dental nurse in 1998.

She gained her Certificate in Orthodontic Nursing in 2011, and then went on to train as an Orthodontic Therapist on the Yorkshire Orthodontic Therapy course at Leeds Dental Institute, qualifying in 2013.

Joy Pearson

Joy studied at Sheffield Hallam University, gaining her degree in Health & Community Studies. She began her career in general dentistry in 2000, before moving into specialist Orthodontic practice in 2008.

After completing her training in Orthodontic Therapy at Leeds Dental Institute she worked in specialist practice in Sheffield and Nottingham before joining us in July 2015.

Joy says the most rewarding part of her job is seeing patients beaming with their beautiful smiles at the end of treatment.

Trudi McGee

Trudi qualified as a dental nurse in 1992 and then worked in general dental practice, gaining further qualifications in Oral Health Education in 1994. She has worked in orthodontics since 1991 and joined us in 1996.

She achieved further qualifications in dental radiography in 2001 and Orthodontic Nursing in 2009, both at Charles Clifford Dental Hospital, Sheffield. In July 2011, Trudi qualified as an Orthodontic Therapist at Leeds Dental Institute.
